Lineage Logistics Announces Change in Customer Need for New Century Project

Lineage Logistics, LLC ("Lineage"), a leading international warehousing and logistics company, today announced that due to a change in customer needs, Lineage will no longer pursue the development of a temperature-controlled storage facility at the New Century AirCenter in Olathe, Kansas.

“Lineage’s approach to new construction, expansion and acquisition has long been to provide the space and solutions where and when our customers need it,” said Mike McClendon, EVP of Network Optimization at Lineage. “In the case of the proposed New Century facility, unforeseen changes to our customers’ supply chain and logistics needs have, for now, prompted us to withdraw our plans.”

Responsible Government

Concerned Citizens for Responsible Government is a non-profit watchdog organization in Johnson County Kansas. We oppose a recent development deal that brings dangerous chemicals in mass. Our opinion is that the deal did not consider or properly inform nearby residential property owners.
Our long term mission is to bring accountabilty to local government processes. Too often it seems that local government is approving its own agendas without independent oversight/accountabilty/vetting or consideration of the public well being. We all need to be watching what our elected officials are doing.

Stop the Project at New Century

Our elected board of county commissioners and our county planners have approved permits for Lineage Logistics to build a massive, 85 foot tall, noisy, 411,000 square foot freezer warehouse with thousands of pounds of toxic, explosive, hazardous and deadly anhydrous ammonia next to our homes.

Poor Track Record

A Lineage Logistics cold storage plant in McAllen, Texas was recently fined $58,000 for 9 very serious violations by OSHA for ammonia release and related ammonia handling violations.

Dangerous

Anhydrous ammonia storage and use is not acceptable next to any residential property due to its toxic, extremely hazardous, explosive and deadly nature.

Detention Facility

What happens to the inmates in the 1081 bed adult detention center directly across the street in case of a leak and evacuation? Do they just open the jail doors or leave them?

Property Values

PEC3 zoning regulations, codes and requirements that are in place to protect all of us from irresponsible development that would decrease our property values have been ignored.

1.5 Mile Evacuation Zone

The black square in the middle of the map is the proposed location of the new cold storage plant. In case of a leak, an evacuation is recommended for 1½ miles of the surrounding area. That's why these facilities should not be located close to residential areas.

In this case, the one and a half mile mark takes in over 1800 homes - on Gardner Lake, in subdivisions Prairie Highlands, Copper Springs and north Parma. Sunflower Elementary school is right outside the line. An 1000 bed jail is right across the street.

Which is it?

Ammonia, also known as azane, is a chemical compound made of molecules which each contain one atom of nitrogen and three atoms of hydrogen. The molecular structure of ammonia is NH3.

Ammonia can be very dangerous because if it accidentally enters your body it reacts with water to produce ammonium hydroxide which is highly corrosive and which can damage human cells such as the lining of the airways.
